Did you know that the European Union has banned many cosmetic ingredients that are currently in use in the United States? Approximately 1,200 ingredients have been banned in the EU. Are you ready for this? The FDA only prohibits 10! The EU has spent substantially more in resources than the US to ensure the safety of skin care products. Unfortunately, many consumers are still under the impression that the FDA regulates cosmetics, when in fact, there is no regulating governmental body in place. The FDA will only get involved if an ingredient causes obvious harm to consumers. This makes it so important for us as beauty consumers to actively seek out the products that adhere to EU standards and educate ourselves on what is safe. Skin Deep cosmetics safety database is a great resource and has made remarkable strides in raising awareness about cosmetic safety issues.
